The promontory on which Agropoli stands was inhabited in the Bronze and Iron Ages and was fortified by the Byzantines in the VIth century A.D., they called it " Akropolis",
which means " high town". In the heart of Magna Grecia, a few kilometres from Paestum and Velia, Agropoli is the starting point for excursions to Capri, Ischia, Naples, the coasts of Sorrento, Amalfi, Palinuro, Ascea,
Castellabate, Agnone, Acciaroli, Ercolano and Pompei.
